Subject: Serial port and it's problems

Okay 'E' people, dig your way out of this:

I want to make a small programme that will allow me to enter simple
commands from a serially linked ASCII terminal..
I can do this already, but my problem is that I have (yet) no way
of knowing how many characters I still have waiting in the buffer
of the serial port.. or, if there IS anything waiting..
I've been told to send a query or somthing to the port, but
I can't figure out how!
If anybody can help me, please do!
